The Sleep Famine looks at a problem affecting nearly one third of the population – we are not getting enough rest. An alarming number of accidents and well known catastrophes have been attributed to lack of sleep – the Chernobyl nuclear accident, the Challenger disaster and the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Nowhere is sleep studied more rigorously than at NASA. Getting enough sleep is regarded as an absolute requirement. The viewer is taken on a number of missions where we see how astronauts get their sleep floating in the confines of a space shuttle cabin. The necessity of sleep is also presented in more domestic terms. Through interviews and examples, the correlation between teenagers' sleep habits and academic performance in also revealed. This documentary reveals that the natural human condition is struggling to keep up with the ever increasing pace of society.
