<p>It's now official. Environment Canada says the first part of 1998 has been the hottest on record, 2.7 degrees celcius above normal. More disturbing, it's part of a continuing trend of global warming. All this isn't news to an international team of scientists aboard a Canadian icebreaker in the high Arctic. They've been drifting with the polar ice since last fall. They know already that the ice is thinner, and there's less of it.</p>
